If you have been researching HIFU or non-surgical skin tightening in Geelong, you may have come across two similar names: Ultraformer III and Ultraformer MPT.
Both platforms were developed by CLASSYS and use focused ultrasound technology to deliver energy at selected depths beneath the skin. However, they are not the same generation of device.
Ultraformer III is the earlier platform that many clients already recognise. Ultraformer MPT is the newer generation, developed with updated energy delivery, additional treatment modes and expanded cartridge options.
Vitality has chosen to offer Ultraformer MPT. At the time of publication, we are one of only two clinics in Geelong offering this newer platform.
So, what has changed between Ultraformer III and Ultraformer MPT, and why does the generation of technology matter?
What is Ultraformer MPT?
Ultraformer MPT is a non-invasive treatment platform that uses high intensity focused ultrasound, commonly known as HIFU.
The device concentrates ultrasound energy at selected depths beneath the skin’s surface. This creates precise points of thermal activity within the targeted tissue without intentionally removing or resurfacing the outer layer of the skin.
The controlled thermal response is designed to initiate collagen renewal and tissue remodelling over time.
Depending on individual suitability, Ultraformer MPT may be considered for concerns including:
- Mild to moderate skin laxity
- Softening of the jawline
- Reduced definition through the lower face
- Laxity beneath the chin
- Changes in neck firmness
- Fine lines and changes in skin quality
- Selected facial or body-contouring concerns
The treatment can be adjusted according to the area, depth and intended purpose.
What does MPT mean?
MPT stands for Micro Pulsed Technology.
This technology allows ultrasound energy to be delivered through a series of closely spaced micro pulses. Ultraformer MPT also retains a normal dot mode, giving clinicians more than one way to deliver energy according to the treatment area and goal.
CLASSYS describes the system as having four energy-delivery modes. These include options for dot-based treatment and broader micro-pulsed delivery.
The different modes give the clinician greater flexibility when planning treatment across areas that vary in shape, tissue depth and sensitivity.
MPT is not simply a new name for Ultraformer III. It represents an updated method of delivering focused ultrasound energy.
What is Ultraformer III?
Ultraformer III is the preceding generation within the Ultraformer family.
Like Ultraformer MPT, it uses focused ultrasound energy to create thermal points at selected tissue depths. It has been widely used for non-surgical skin tightening, collagen stimulation and body contouring.
Ultraformer III remains a recognised HIFU platform and shares the same fundamental treatment principle as MPT.
The main distinction is not that one device uses HIFU and the other does not. Both use focused ultrasound.
The difference lies in how the newer MPT platform can deliver that energy, the treatment modes available and the range of cartridges that can be used to tailor the procedure.
What is the difference between Ultraformer MPT and Ultraformer III?
Ultraformer MPT builds on the foundation established by Ultraformer III.
Key developments include:
- Micro Pulsed Technology
- Four selectable energy-delivery modes
- Faster energy delivery in MP mode
- Ten interchangeable cartridge options
- Additional treatment depths
- Linear and circular energy patterns
- Lighter and more streamlined handpieces
- Greater flexibility across face and body areas
These updates may support a more efficient and adaptable treatment experience.
Newer technology does not remove the need for an experienced practitioner. The device still needs to be used with careful anatomical assessment, appropriate energy selection and a treatment plan designed for the individual.

This comparison provides a general overview. Treatment outcomes depend on much more than the name of the device.
How does Ultraformer MPT work?
Ultraformer MPT focuses ultrasound energy at a selected point beneath the skin.
The energy creates thermal coagulation points within targeted tissue. This controlled thermal response initiates a repair and remodelling process involving collagen.
The treatment does not heat every layer of tissue uniformly. Instead, the clinician selects a cartridge designed to deliver energy at a particular depth.
Available Ultraformer MPT depths include:
- 1.5 mm
- 2.0 mm
- 3.0 mm
- 4.5 mm
- 6.0 mm
- 9.0 mm
- 13.0 mm
Different depths have different roles. Superficial cartridges may be selected to support skin quality and collagen within the dermis. Deeper cartridges may be used when the treatment focus involves structural support or selected body-contouring concerns.
Not every depth is appropriate for every client or facial area.
Why do the additional cartridges matter?
The face is not one uniform treatment area.
The tissue around the eyes differs from the tissue along the lower face, jawline or beneath the chin. The neck and body also have their own anatomical considerations.
Ultraformer MPT offers ten interchangeable cartridges designed for different depths, treatment areas and energy patterns.
This broader selection allows the clinician to tailor treatment according to:
- Tissue depth
- Facial anatomy
- Degree of laxity
- Treatment area
- Skin quality
- Areas of natural hollowing
- Sensitivity
- The intended outcome
Some cartridges deliver energy in a linear pattern. Booster-style cartridges use a circular pattern that can assist with treatment across smaller or more contoured areas.
Having more options does not mean every cartridge should be used during every appointment. It means the clinician can select the options that have a clear purpose for the individual client.
Is Ultraformer MPT faster than Ultraformer III?
Ultraformer MPT was developed to improve treatment efficiency.
According to CLASSYS, MP mode delivers ultrasound energy approximately 2.5 times faster than the platform’s normal mode.
A faster delivery method may reduce the time required to treat some areas. The actual appointment length will still depend on:
- The size of the treatment area
- The number of treatment lines or pulses required
- The cartridges selected
- The depths being targeted
- The client’s treatment plan
- Time required for assessment and preparation
- Treatment should not be rushed simply because the device can deliver energy more efficiently.
Accuracy, communication and appropriate placement remain more important than completing the appointment as quickly as possible.
Is Ultraformer MPT more comfortable?
Ultraformer MPT’s micro-pulsed delivery was developed partly to create a more manageable treatment experience.
By delivering energy through closely spaced micro pulses, MP mode distributes the treatment differently from a conventional dot-based approach.
Some clients may find the newer delivery method more comfortable than their previous experience with Ultraformer III. However, sensation remains individual.
During treatment, you may experience:
- Warmth
- Tingling
- Brief points of sensitivity
- A tightening sensation
- Greater sensitivity near bony areas
Your Dermal Clinician will communicate with you throughout the appointment and adjust the approach where appropriate.
No HIFU treatment should be described as completely painless for every client.
Does Ultraformer MPT provide better results than Ultraformer III?
Ultraformer MPT provides newer technology and greater treatment flexibility, but it would be misleading to suggest that the device generation alone guarantees a better result.
Treatment outcomes are influenced by:
- Whether HIFU is appropriate for the concern
- The degree of skin laxity
- Facial anatomy
- Tissue thickness
- Cartridge selection
- Treatment depth
- Energy settings
- Placement and technique
- The number of treatment lines delivered
- The client’s natural collagen response
- Age, health and lifestyle factors
Ultraformer III and Ultraformer MPT share the same fundamental HIFU principle. MPT expands how that energy can be delivered and gives the clinician additional options for personalisation.
The device matters, but the quality of the assessment and treatment plan matters just as much.
What concerns may Ultraformer MPT support?
Ultraformer MPT may be considered for clients beginning to notice changes in skin firmness and facial definition.
Mild to moderate skin laxity
Collagen and elastin provide support within the skin. As these structures change over time, the skin may appear less firm.
Ultraformer MPT creates a controlled response at selected depths to support progressive collagen remodelling.
It is generally most appropriate for mild to moderate laxity. More significant sagging may require a different treatment approach.
Softening of the jawline
Changes in skin support and underlying tissue can reduce definition along the jawline.
Ultraformer MPT may be used to target selected depths through the lower face and jawline when the client is suitable.
Laxity beneath the chin
The area beneath the chin can be influenced by skin laxity, tissue distribution and facial structure.
Ultraformer MPT may have a role when reduced firmness or selected areas of submental tissue are contributing to the concern.
Correct assessment is important because not every change beneath the chin has the same cause.
Neck laxity
The skin of the neck is thinner and has different anatomical considerations from the lower face.
Ultraformer MPT’s range of cartridges allows the clinician to select appropriate depths for suitable areas. Treatment needs to be planned carefully around the structures of the neck.
Fine lines and skin quality
The more superficial MPT and booster cartridges may be used to support dermal collagen, texture and selected fine lines.
These options do not replace treatments designed specifically for pigmentation, redness or significant surface damage. They provide another way to support skin quality within a broader treatment plan.
Is Ultraformer MPT a non-surgical facelift?
Ultraformer MPT is often described as a non-surgical lifting or facial tightening treatment.
This terminology helps explain that the treatment is performed without incisions or surgical recovery. However, it should not imply that HIFU can reproduce the degree of lifting achieved through surgery.
Ultraformer MPT may support gradual improvements in firmness and definition for suitable clients with mild to moderate laxity.
It cannot:
- Remove a significant amount of excess skin
- Reposition tissue in the same way as surgery
- Restore lost facial volume
- Stop the natural ageing process
- Guarantee a particular degree of lifting
A consultation helps establish whether the level of change you are seeking is realistic with a non-surgical treatment.
Does Ultraformer MPT restore facial volume?
No. Ultraformer MPT does not restore lost facial volume.
Skin laxity and volume loss are different concerns, although they can occur together.
Laxity relates to reduced firmness and support. Volume loss may involve changes in facial fat, bone and other underlying structures.
HIFU may improve the appearance of selected contours by supporting tightening, but it does not replace volume in hollow areas.
This distinction is particularly important for clients who already have a naturally lean face or visible hollowing. Treating unsuitable areas or using inappropriate depths may contribute to unwanted tissue reduction.
Your clinician should assess where tightening may be beneficial and where treatment should be avoided.
When will I see changes?
Ultraformer MPT works by initiating a gradual collagen-remodelling response.
Some clients may notice an initial feeling of tightness after treatment. More visible changes generally develop progressively during the following weeks and months as collagen renewal occurs.
Vitality advises that changes may become more noticeable over approximately eight to twelve weeks.
The timeline and extent of improvement vary according to:
- Age
- Skin condition
- Degree of laxity
- Treatment area
- Energy and depth selection
- Natural collagen response
- Lifestyle and environmental factors
Results should be reviewed progressively rather than judged immediately after treatment.
How many treatments will I need?
Some clients may be suitable for one treatment, while others may benefit from additional appointments or future maintenance.
The number required depends on:
- The concern being treated
- Degree of laxity
- Treatment area
- Previous procedures
- Individual response
- Long-term goals
More treatment is not automatically better.
Your clinician should allow time for the collagen-remodelling response to develop before deciding whether another treatment is appropriate.
Is there downtime after Ultraformer MPT?
Ultraformer MPT generally involves limited visible recovery for suitable clients.
Temporary responses may include:
- Redness
- Mild swelling
- Tenderness
- Tingling
- Sensitivity
- Temporary numbness or altered sensation
Vitality advises that mild redness, swelling or tenderness may settle within approximately 48 hours, although responses vary.
Less common risks are also possible. Your Dermal Clinician will discuss relevant risks and aftercare during your consultation.
Minimal downtime does not mean that treatment is risk free or suitable for everyone.
Who may not be suitable for Ultraformer MPT?
Suitability must be assessed individually.
Ultraformer MPT may be unsuitable or need to be postponed in circumstances involving:
- Pregnancy or breastfeeding
- Active infection
- Open wounds or inflamed skin
- Certain metal implants near the treatment area
- Implantable electronic devices
- Some bleeding conditions
- Anticoagulant medication
- Recent procedures within the area
- Significant facial hollowing
- Certain medical or neurological conditions
This is not a complete list.
Your clinician needs accurate information about your health, medications, implants and previous treatments before proceeding.
Can Ultraformer MPT be combined with other skin treatments?
Ultraformer MPT may form part of a broader skin plan when several concerns are present.
For example, HIFU may be used to support laxity and facial definition, while another treatment addresses:
- Pigmentation
- Redness
- Dehydration
- Surface texture
- Congestion
- Barrier health
These treatments may need to be performed at different times.
Your Dermal Clinician will consider how each procedure works, which tissue depth it targets and how much recovery time is required before creating a treatment sequence.
The goal is not to combine as many treatments as possible. Every treatment should have a clear and appropriate role.
