Sunspots

Sunspots are dark-coloured marks that appear on parts of the body that are exposed to the sun. The most common parts of the body that sunspots will develop are the arms, shoulders, back, and of course, the face.

Many people simply dislike the appearance of sunspots, and seek treatments that will help reduce their appearance while subsequently improving their skin’s overall look, texture, and tone.

Non-surgical treatments target sunspots safely and effectively, resulting in a lessened appearance of sunspots and more even overall complexion. Lasers and other forms of light therapy are highly effective at targeting sunspots and reducing their appearance.

It’s critical that following treatment, you continue to protect your skin with cosmeceuticals and a physical sunscreen on a daily basis.

Despite their appearance, sunspots are not dangerous and do not pose a risk to your health.

However it’s critical to understand that what you presume to be a sunspot may actually be a mole that could potentially turn cancerous if left untreated.

Get to know your skin, pay attention to changing lesions or new spots emerging, and get your skin screened on a regular basis.

While they may look similar, there are quite a few differences in the formation and appearance of sunspots compared to freckles.

Both are linked to the MC1R gene, responsible for skin complexion, but sunspots tend to accumulate with age and form later in life, due to prolonged sun exposure as a result of increased pigment.

Freckles appear as a child gets older and may fade over time. They are usually seasonal, becoming darker when exposed to the sun during the warmer months and fading in winter, whereas sunspots are permanent.

Sunspots are primarily caused by sun exposure, and while freckles may become more prominent when exposed to the sun, their appearance is also hereditary. In short, freckles are not a sign of sun damage; rather they suggest a skin type that is sensitive to the sun.

What Causes Hyperpigmentation?

Before we get into the “why”, it’s important we understand the “what”: pigmentation is caused by an increase in the
natural pigment melanin. But what is melanin?

Melanin is a pigment that impacts the colour of our hair, eyes, and skin. A higher amount of melanin means darker features,
and it’s melanin that makes your skin more tanned after you’ve been exposed to the sun.

An increase in melanin is usually referred to as ‘hyperpigmentation’ which is the term used to describe
uneven, patchy, and darker spots on the skin.

Sun damage

Excessive exposure to the sun is one of the most common causes of hyperpigmentation.

In some cases, sun exposure leads to uneven melanin production which results in irregular colouring of the skin – sun spots – and also stretched blood vessels resulting in red, blotchy patches called diffuse redness.

Pregnancy

Your body goes through a lot of changes during pregnancy. Throughout the journey, you might notice that your skin starts developing irregular patches and dark spots.

Chloasma (also known as ‘the mask of pregnancy’) is thought to be caused by changes in hormone levels, where female sex hormones like estregen produce more melanin pigment when skin is exposed to the sun.

Contraceptive pill

The contraceptive pill triggers melanin for the same reason as pregnancy: your levels of estrogen in the body increases.

This results in higher levels of melanin that can lead to pigmentation. Ensure you wear a physical sunscreen daily.
